Sociable leisure rides for enthusiastic cyclists
Second Sunday – A morning ride starting from Wantage. The ride will be Blue or Red grade and may include a refreshment stop en route or at the end of the ride. Expect to be back around 13:00.9:22 pm
Summer Wednesday – Weekly evening ride from Wantage at either Blue or Red grade, which will complete before sunset. We will have a variety of paces and terrains across the summer season.9:19 pm
As long as the weather is good, this will be a "something different" ride to Royal Internationa Air Tattoo at Fairford.
Bring a picnic and some thing to keep you warm after riding - we'll be setting up in the East car park on the grassy area. Not a bad view of the air displays, and no cost (but there are no toilets, so a quick bike ride to some discreet bushes is in order).
We'll leave mid-afternoon when folks want to.
Expect a relatively easy ride in either direction.
Third Sunday – An all-day ride starting away from Wantage, so you'll need to either ride or drive out to the start point. The ride will be Blue or Red grade and include lunch and maybe other refreshment stops. The ride should finish by 17:00 (or 30 minutes before sunset during winter months).
A ride around the stunning Isle of Wight. This is a classic ride that everyone should tick off of their bucket list! The route takes in stunning coastal roads, quaint inland villages, seaside resorts, bustling sea ports, ancient ruins and buildings. Pretty much everything this magnificent island has to offer!
The route is very undulating with few flat sections and several stiff climbs but is extremely scenic. Distance is 106km (68 miles) with around 1,500m (5,000 feet) of climbing. Which makes it about 1.4 times hilly.
We will cycle at a pace suitable for the group. The ride is very doable when taken at a sustainable pace. Do expect around 5.5 to 6hrs of actual cycling time though and bring/wear clothing appropriate for the weather forecast.
We will catch the 09:15 ferry from Lymington Pier (SO41 5SB). We will travel as day return foot passengers (£15.40 for adults and £11.50 for 60+, tickets can be bought online in advance or at the ticket office before sailing), bikes are carried free of charge. The crossing takes 40 minutes. There is a pay and display car park at the ferry terminal (£6.40 for 2-16hrs). Bring enough change for the machines.
You must arrive at least 30mins before the ferry to allow time for parking, buying tickets and boarding. Boarding commences 15 minutes before sailing. We will car share as much as possible.
There is limited food on the ferry (tea, coffee, cakes, toast) but there is a café at the ferry terminal if you want to arrive early enough to grab some breakfast!
We'll stop at the Old World Tea Rooms in Godshill for a late morning cuppa/comfort break. Lunch stop will be at the Toll Gate Café next to the harbour in Bembridge. We'll aim to stop for an afternoon tea/ice cream and comfort break at Cowes dependant on the time. Return ferry will either be the 17:20 or 18:20 from Yarmouth.
Please let me know beforehand if you are coming on the ride so I can expect to see you at Lymington.
