Hopes were high for a dry ride as we left Lydiard Park but these were later to be dashed. After the first dry 20km we decided to take a 10km detour for a visit to the intriguing AV8 cafe on Kemble airfield. Unfortunately the ride leaders research was woefully inadequate and we found it to be closed. (I'm claiming that the detour helped us avoid the first of the showers that were beginning to roll through). It didn't take us long from there to reach the Veloton Cafe at Tetbury where we enjoyed excellent coffee while sitting in the middle of their workshop surrounded by exotic bikes and memorabilia. After that the light showers continued and we were fortunate to reach the lunch stop at Sherston just before a proper downpour. The quirky Courtyard cafe was a hit with all for its excellent food, cosy atmosphere and warm welcome - recommended for future use. Toasted paninis all round had us in good spirits as we set of again in light rain. From here on the rain got pretty heavy as we rode on to Castle Combe. This whole valley was filled with the pungent aroma of wild garlic which seemed to be flowering on every square inch of woodland floor for miles around. On we rode along some lovely quiet lanes, passing several disgruntled riders on a local sportive event, before the rain eventually stopped and we got dried off over the final 20km. This is a really scenic route and it was suggested that we ought to ride it again on a sunny day sometime in the future in order to do it justice.
