The ride started with three at Wantage Market Place and we picked up Simon and Chris at the top of Hackpen. We had a smooth ride into Hungerford and arrived at “Trays” the café in Barrs Yard. There was already a selection of bikes sitting outside, so fortunately we were able to find a table. After some excellent coffee and food, we made our way through the metropolis of Hungerford and visited St Mary’s Church in Kintbury, where Sir Gordon Richards (26 Champion Jockey) and William Winterbourne (Hanged at Reading Gaol for his part in Swing Riots of 1830) are buried. Chris headed back to Great Shefford at the Wickham junction the remainder of the group continued to Boxford. Well, no ride would be complete without a mechanical issue, Simon had a back wheel “blowout” as we started to work our way through Fawley, fortunately Pete the mechanic was on hand to help sort out the damaged tyre. After all the stress of the repair work a drink at the King Alfreds Head was required for Simon and rest of his mechanical support team. Nice day out despite the mechanical.
